The Phobos BT and Ares BT swing-gate operators (the 24V linear arm series common on Phoenix residential installations from 2016-2022) use a specific 40mm offset hinge pin with an M10 mounting bore. The Deimos BT and Icaro heavy-duty swing series step up to a 50mm pin and thicker roller bushing to handle the higher torque output. For Thalia and Orion sliding gate motors, the roller assembly is a wheeled carriage unit rather than a hinge pin, and the critical spec is the track width, either 60mm or 80mm.

To identify your part, check the silver BFT data plate on the operator housing for the model and production date. The hinge itself usually carries a stamped part number on the barrel, something like “P123014” or “P123015” for the Phobos-era hardware. If that stamp is rusted over, which we see often on gates facing south into the Phoenix sun, measure the pin diameter and the center-to-center distance of the mounting holes.

• Visible roller wobble or lateral play in the slide gate track. The roller bearings have spalled; on BFT sliding systems this allows the gate to cant in the track, which wears the nylon guide blocks and eventually jams the motor. What you can check yourself: with the operator in manual release mode, lift the gate slightly and feel for grittiness or notchiness as the hinge rotates. Look for the rust streaks and pin scoring we described above. If the gate is a light aluminum tube frame and the hinge bolts are accessible, a homeowner with a socket set and a helper can sometimes swap the assembly.

Where DIY goes wrong: heavier steel or iron gates require proper support; without a lift or temporary prop, the gate can drop and crush a hand against the post. The Phoenix sun also means those bolts have been heat-cycled for years and may shear off, leaving a broken stud that needs extraction. If your BFT operator is still under warranty, using non-spec hardware or improper torque can void coverage. And if the hinge pin has welded itself to the barrel from corrosion, cutting it free without damaging the gate frame takes a technician’s judgment.
