Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear hinge and roller hardware spans several operator families, and the part you need depends on whether your gate is swinging or sliding. For swing gates, the LS850, LS850P, and SWD series use a distinct hinge pin and roller bearing assembly that mounts between the gate leaf and the operator arm bracket. Slide gates running the SLR or HSLG series carry tandem roller carriages on a galvanized track; the rollers themselves are sealed bearings pressed into a steel housing, not the plastic wheel kits you see on lighter brands.

To identify your part, check the operator data plate for the model prefix. The LS series plates are on the motor housing underside; SLR plates sit on the drive chassis near the limit-switch cover. Bring that prefix when you call. Signs Your Linear Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing

• Grinding or squealing at the open or close limit. The sealed bearing inside the roller has dried out. Phoenix dust and the 115-degree summer cycle break down grease faster than the Midwest ratings on the label suggest. The operator keeps running but the gate lags, and the motor draws extra amperage.
• Gate shudders mid-travel then smooths out. The hinge pin is egging out its bore. On heavier wrought-iron gates common in Arcadia and the North Central corridor, this wear pattern shows up around year six, not the ten-year mark the manual implies.
• Operator fault code “Obstruction” with nothing in the path. A seized roller makes the control board think the gate hit an object. The force sensor trips, and on newer Linear boards this logs as error 4 or 7 depending on firmware.
• Visible rust weeping from the roller housing. The seal has failed. Once water gets in, the bearing race pits. We see this on north-facing gates in Paradise Valley where sprinkler overspray hits the hardware and the afternoon sun never fully dries it.
• Gate sits crooked in the closed position. The lower hinge roller has collapsed on one side. The gate still moves, but the latch no longer mates clean and the operator arm loads sideways, which will kill the gearbox eventually.

A homeowner can safely check whether the roller turns freely by hand with the operator disconnected at the breaker. If it grinds or hangs, you’ve found your problem. What you should not do is remove a loaded hinge or roller on a heavy gate without proper support. A 400-pound wrought-iron leaf can shift on a worn hinge pin and pinch hard, or worse. The torsion on some slide-gate carriages is enough to shear a careless wrench.
